Mainstage-2

About NexTrust

The objective of NexTrust was to demonstrate how the efficiency and sustainability of the logistics supply chain could be increased by developing interconnected trusted collaborative networks.

These networks fully integrate shippers, logistic service providers (LSP) and intermodal operators asequal partners. In order to reach a high level of sustainability, these networks will not only bundle freight volumes, but shift them off the road to intermodal rail and waterway as well. A key indicator of success will be whether the networks are able to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and traffic congestion, while simultaneously improving asset utilization and operational cost efficiencies. If these outcomes can be demonstrated, NexTrust will have created a more sustainable, competitive arena for European logistics that will be an inspirational example for the market.

Pilots

NexTrust demonstrated how these collaborative networks could be set-up and run, by coordinating over 40 pilot projects across the length and breadth of the logistics industry. These include:

Bundling freight volumes to reduce the number of vehicles running empty, or at less than full capacity

Shifting freight from the road onto rail and waterways which are more carbon-efficient

Creating and refining technologies designed to optimise efficiency in logistics, including re-engineering networks and improving real-time utilisation of transport assets.

Funding

NexTrust is a 31 member consortium of some of Europe’s leading thinkers on collaborative logistics.

The grant was awarded in a competition entitled “Fostering synergies alongside the supply chain (including e-commerce)” under Horizon 2020 and is administrated by the European Commission’s Innovation and Networks Executive Agency.

About Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. It promises more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market.
